Here’s a quick video going over the proper tightening of the top assembly of a coilover. NEVER should an impact gun and/or vise grips be used when assembling a coilover.
While you would think this is common sense, this happens more often than not. What this does is any type of visegrip or channel lock can cause scratches or pits in the shaft, which will wear out any rubber o-rings or seals inside the damper. This will cause leaks and premature damper wear.
Same goes for impact guns, if you’re not careful with it while assembling the shock, you can “spin” all of the internals of the damper, causing damage to the internals.
